This wine is all about bright, ripe red fruits, with a lovely touch of sweet oak spice in the background. It’s smooth as silk, thanks to its soft tannins, and has a perfect lift of acidity that makes it super elegant on the finish. Château Macquin sits just a stone’s throw from Saint-Émilion, in the tiny village of Saint-Georges, which might be the smallest Bordeaux appellation, but it’s certainly not short on quality. At 89 metres above sea level, the vines here benefit from a fantastic elevation that brings freshness and concentration to the wine. Planted on rich clay and limestone soils, the vines—ranging from 15 to 60 years old—are sustainably farmed, with no nasty herbicides or chemicals in sight. Just pure, clean winemaking at its best.

Radiant pale gold in colour, it shows fine, persistent bubbles and aromas of pastry, ripe apricot, mango and dried fruits. The palate is silky and layered, with plum pastry, melon and spice, finishing with both richness and remarkable freshness. Founded in 1851 by Charles Heidsieck, the man affectionately known as ‘Champagne Charlie’, this house is the smallest of the Grandes Marques yet one of the most admired. Based in Reims, the wines benefit from grapes sourced across 60 top vineyard sites including Oger, Ambonnay and Verneuil, delivering texture, power and finesse. The Brut Réserve spends 36–48 months ageing in chalk cellars, far longer than required, and is built on an unusually high proportion of reserve wines averaging 10 years old. With a winemaking team that has won Sparkling Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge 16 times, Charles Heidsieck continues to be celebrated for its unrivalled consistency and depth of style.
