The Matsu Wine Collection

El Viejo is the top wine available in the Matsu Family Collection. It is an opulent and elegant wine made from 100% Tinto de Toro, also know as Tempranillo, from very old vines. The older the vine, the more intense the flavour potential is. The grapes come from ancient vineyards planted on very low production soils of sandstone and clay at about 650-700m altitude. It spends 16 months in new oak made from vines which are over 100 years old. These are vines planted around the time of World War 1. A very serious an intense wine layered with flavours of dark fruit, smoke, spice and herbs. It tastes similar enough to a very full bodied Bordeaux, and we would definitely recommend opening in the morning so it has plenty of time to open up. Hugely intense and very refined.

El Recio is an opulent and elegant wine made from 100% Tempranillo from very old vines. It spends 14 months in new oak which creates a robust wine with dark red fruits, spice,herbs and a lovely silky mouthfeel. This is our favourite of the collection. Its fancy and very good value for money. Its a must have people who like full bodied reds. El Recio is one of our dessert island wines and we couldn't recommend it any more highly.  

Bodegas Matsu produces wine in the Toro region from very old Tempranillo vines, with very little intervention for a pure expression of the region. The old vines have a low yield and produce concentrated and intense berries. El Picaro is a rich, ripe and powerful wine. Inky purple in colour and flavours of fresh blackberries and blueberries and a small dollop of mocha from the 3 months spent in oak. Not for the faint hearted.
