Portugal

Portugal is home to Douro, the world's oldest legally recognised wine-producing area, legislated in 1756 for Port production. Unlike other European countries, Portugal has remained a fringe wine region due to its unique, hard-to-pronounce grape varieties like Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional, and white grapes such as Alvarinho, Maria Gomes, and Cercial.

Don't let unfamiliar names deter you; Portuguese wines offer some of the best value, especially from Douro and Dao. For whites, Vinho Verde stands out.
