At The Nude Wine Company, we believe that every celebration should be accompanied by the perfect bottle of champagne. Opening a bottle of bubbly can be an art form, and doing it correctly can elevate your celebration to a whole new level. Whether you're toasting to a special occasion or simply enjoying a glass, here's how to open a bottle of champagne like a true pro.
Michelle was recently on Virgin Media’s Ireland doing a demo on how to open a bottle of Champagne like a PRO and not lose any precious fizz!
Why Proper Technique Matters
Opening champagne correctly ensures:
1. Safety: Champagne bottles are under high pressure, the proper technique ensures no one loses an eye in the process!
2. No Spillages: The only thing worse than spelling wine, is spilling Champagne. Theproper technique will ensure you lose nothing.
3. Elegance: A well-executed opening adds a touch of sophistication to any event.
Step-by-Step Guide to Opening Champagne
1. Choose the Right Champagne: Growers Champagne, Premium Cava and even Cremant are delicious wines.
2. Chill the Bottle: Ensure your champagne is well-chilled, ideally between 45-48°F (7-9°C). Chilling reduces the pressure inside the bottle, making it safer to open and preserving its delightful bubbles.
3. Gather Your Tools. You'll need:
- A bottle of fizz.
- A clean, dry towel.
- Champagne flutes or wine glasses.
4. Remove the Foil: The first step towards a perfect pour is to peel away the foil.

5. Loosen the Wire Cage: Hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle and keep your thumb over the cork. Gently untwist the wire cage, loosening it but keeping it securely on the bottle.

6. Hold the Cork and Twist the Bottle With or without a towel over the cork, grip it firmly. Slowly twist the bottle (not the cork) to ease the cork out. The pressure should gently push the cork out with a soft whisper; rather than a loud pop.

7. Pour and Enjoy: Pour the champagne gently into wine glasses or champagne flutes at a 45 degree angle again, this will reduce the risk of the bubbles over flowing. Allow the bubbles to settle before drinking.
Tips for Opening Champagne
- Use a Towel, and keep the cage on: This helps grip the cork and control its release.
- Twist the Bottle, Not the Cork: This ensures a smoother, safer opening.
- Open at an Angle: Tilt the bottle whilst opening to minimise the bubbles spilling out
- Shaking the Bottle: This increases pressure and can cause the champagne to spray, wasting precious bubbles.
- Forcing the Cork: Let the pressure naturally ease the cork out to prevent accidents and maintain the elegance of the moment.
- Skipping the Chill: Warm champagne is more volatile and harder to control, diminishing the drinking experience.
Conclusion
Opening a bottle of champagne with a whisper rather than a POP is a skill every wine lover should master! By following our simple and easy steps, you'll ensure a safe, sophisticated, and enjoyable experience every time.
