About Akutain Gran Reserva
Akutain Gran Reserva 2015 is everything I love about traditional Rioja. Produced only in exceptional vintages, this beautifully mature Rioja Gran Reserva is layered with ripe red cherries, dried cranberries, cedar, tobacco, leather and sweet baking spice, all wrapped around silky tannins and remarkable freshness. Bodegas Akutain is a small family estate in Haro, Rioja, where Jon Akutain continues the work started when his family purchased the property in 1978 and planted the vineyards over 40 years ago. Unlike around 80% of Rioja's grapes, which are sold to cooperatives, every grape from Akutain's seven-hectare estate is grown, harvested and made into wine on the property, giving the family complete control over quality. Situated at the meeting point of warm Mediterranean air and cooling Atlantic breezes, the vineyards enjoy one of Rioja's most distinctive climates, allowing the Tempranillo, Garnacha and rare Maturano grapes to achieve outstanding ripeness while developing thicker skins that bring structure, freshness and remarkable ageing potential.
