About Vermut de Capcanes, Spain, Vermouth
If you love something rich and a little different, this Vermut de Capçanes is well worth trying. Dark tawny in colour with hints of ruby red, it opens with lovely herbal notes of sage and elderflower, then fills the mouth with a generous, smooth sweetness balanced by a mild bitterness. Caramel and toasty oak add real complexity, carrying through to a long, persistent finish. It is a wonderful vermouth to sip on its own or over ice, and just as happy alongside good food.
Celler de Capçanes was founded in 1933 by five families from the village of Capçanes, tucked into the Priorat hills inland from Tarragona, an area with a long winemaking history and some vineyards nearing a century old. This vermouth starts life as a base wine flavoured with elderflower and sage, then is blended with sweet wine, fortified, and aged for more than two years using the Solera method in French oak barrels. Two winemakers shape it today: Angel Teixido, who oversees the viticulture, and Jurgen Wagner, who trained at Geisenheim and brings his skill to blending. Together they make this a dynamic, exciting winery, and this vermouth a lovely bottle to explore.
